Types Of Stroke (And Major Causes Of Stroke)

A stroke occurs when the flow of blood to the brain is obstructed. When the brain no longer receives blood which carries oxygen, the brain cells begins to die immediately. When this happens, parts of body coordinated by the injured brain stops to work. Stroke which is also referred to as cerebrovascular accident or brain attack can actually be prevented by maintaining a healthy life style and visiting the doctor to treat risk factors which one may possess.   1. Ischemic stroke
  2. Hemorrhagic stroke

Ischemic Stroke

This is the most common type of stroke and it occurs when the blood vessels transporting blood to the brain is blocked. When the blood vessels are blocked, the brain can’t get neither oxygen nor nutrients, therefore it losses energy and will stop working.
Ischemic Stroke is caused by several diseases and can be divided into three.

Types of Ischemic Stroke

  1. Thrombotic stroke
  2. Embolic stroke.
  3. Transient Ischemic stroke

Thrombotic stroke happens when a blood clot blocks damaged brain arteries in the brain. 50 out of 100 percent of strokes are caused by this. The blocking could occur in large arteries like carotids or could occur in smaller arteries. It is usually deeper in smaller arteries

Embolic Stroke is also caused by blockage in the brain artery but it occurs outside the brain and mostly from the heart.

Transient Ischemic Stroke

There is also something called Transient Ischemic Stroke (TIA) or mini stroke which happens when there’s a temporary block of blood flow to the brain. It doesn’t damage the brain permanently but it is a sign that the patient could have the actual stroke and it should be paid attention.

Hemorrhagic stroke

This is caused when blood leaks in the brain. It is less common compared to Ischemic but can be more serious.

Major  Causes of Stroke

  1. High Blood Pressure
  2. Blood Sugar Level
  3. Genetics
  4. Smoking
  5. Age
  6. Gender
  7. Drugs
  8. Obesity
  9. Heart Problems

  • High Blood Pressure

It is also known as hypertension is one of the biggest causes of stroke. Once your blood pressure is higher than it should be, make sure you follow every medication given to you by the doctor religiously.

  • High Blood Sugar Level.

Diabetes usually cause a damage to veins and arteries which makes it more likely for a blockage or leakage of the blood vessels. People who have diabetes are also usually overweight and have high blood pressure, this two condition also raises chances of stroke. Also, when stroke occurs when the level of blood sugar is high, it is usually very dangerous.

  • Genetics.

People who have family history of stroke are usually likely to have it.

  • Smoking.

Tobacco especially contains nicotine which raises the level of blood pressure. The smoke also causes clots and thickening of clots. It is advisable to avoid smoking especially when there’s a family history of stroke.

  • Age

Stroke can occur at any age but the chances generally increase with an increase in age.

  • Gender.

Stroke is usually common to men but also happens in women.

  • Drugs.

Some medications used to tackle blood clotting can raise the risks of stroke. Other medications too can also raise risks.

  • Obesity.

Being overweight is not healthy, it does not only raise chances of stroke but other conditions. It is advisable to exercise regularly and eat good food.

  • Heart Conditions

Conditions like atrial fibrillation, irregular heartbeat causes stroke especially in older men.

It is advised to do all possible to avoid stroke especially if you have realized that you have a greater chance of having it. Also exercise regularly and eat good food.
